Magic

Magic, and the study of the Arcane in general is incredibly rare in northern Nova Esperia. Unlike divine power, which while rare, is generally accepted and even revered in certain countries, Arcane magic is met with distrust at best, and heresy at worst. The Imperium in particular is very keen on burning Witches, considering their magic to be unclean, heretical and in desperate need of ‘purification’. Even in more accepting regions, such as the Shield, Magic is largely considered to be unpredictable and dangerous. The ancient places of the world give evidence that at some point or another, magic was common-place, but whether or not any schools or official training existed is anyone’s guess. Most arcane spell-casters do their best to hide their powers, avoiding vulgar displays of magic whenever possible in favor of smaller, mind-altering spells such as illusions, and things that can be played off as a simple trick, rather than arcane might. Despite the distrust of the Arcane, there are still places where magic not only exists, but thrives. In Thesh, magic is is not only embraced, but those blessed with the Gift, as it it called, are considered of higher blood, and thereby higher authority. Some more militant city-states view Sorcerers as nobility, while rejecting those without the Gift.
